RESEARCH

My lab focuses on understanding effects of anthropogenic chemicals on aquatic organisms.  The majority of research in my lab is aimed at characterizing mechanisms of toxicity using molecular (genomic and epigenetic) and biochemical approaches.

We primarily use zebrafish (Danio rerio), fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), and Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) as our model species .

CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES

Interested in graduate studies or postdoctoral positions?  Contact me to discuss current opportunities.

Graduate Student Opportunities:

Postdoctoral opportunity in ecotoxicology (July 2021)

A postdoctoral position is available to investigate effects of contaminants on physiological performance of fishes, with an emphasis on reproductive performance. Contaminants of interest include UV stabilizers, brominated flame retardants, and PAHs. The primary goal is to use molecular and biochemical approaches to understand mechanisms of toxicity. Applicants should have a background in toxicology or fish physiology, and a strong background in molecular biology. Preference will be given to applicants that have experience in transcriptomics (cDNA microarrays or RNAseq), epigenomics (DNA methylation, ncRNAs), proteomics, or metabolomics .

The ideal candidate is a motivated and creative researcher with an ability to develop and pursue their own ideas within the context of molecular and biochemical mechanisms of toxicity. The candidate should also have an interest in playing an active role in the mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential.

The University of Lethbridge provides a dynamic research environment. The lab is located in the Alberta Water and Environmental Sciences Building, which is home to the state-of-the-art Aquatic Research Facility that houses breeding cultures of fathead minnow, zebrafish, and Japanese medaka, and can also house lager fish species such as rainbow trout. The University is also home to the Southern Alberta Genome Science Centre and the Canadian Center for Behavioral Neuroscience. As such, there are opportunities for collaborative research and training opportunities within the institution.

The University of Lethbridge is located in Lethbridge, which is the largest city in southern Alberta, Canada, with a population of approximately 100,000. It is situated within driving distance of the Rocky Mountains, Waterton Lakes National Park, Banff National Park, the cities of Calgary and Edmonton, and ski resorts including Castle Mountain, Lake Louise, Kananaskis, Fernie, and Whitefish, Montana, USA.

Funding for salary and benefits is secured for 2 years. The start date is flexible. Interested individuals should send a complete academic CV to steve.wiseman@uleth.ca.

Information regarding postdoctoral studies at the University of Lethbridge is available at: https://www.ulethbridge.ca/research/postdoctoral-supports
